17. DEPENDENCY
The roundup takes less time than I thought. David, Jenni, and Aria are all up and ready to go by the time we get there. The flash over to Lincoln Square is easier. The less silver I carry, the lighter I feel when flashing.
We are back on the soccer fields where I first encountered David, and from there, David leaves to scope out Diamond House and see if he can spot any prowlers lurking about. I decide it’s a good time to rehash the plan with everyone.
“So, instead of dangling Nico out there for the Driver to pick up, we are going to try and amp Mo with our combined efforts. She’ll use Nico’s limited memory of the Driver to try and locate where she might be holding up.”
Rook steps forward. “And this won’t give her the option to trace back to where we are?”
I sigh loudly. Crapdammit. I am not prepared to cover contingencies. “I’m hoping not, but be prepared for anything.”
“We’re going to try and at least see where this Driver is being held,” Mo intervenes, “and from there try and see if she flinches or not.”
David flashes into the mix. “We should check out the other Orphanages when we get a chance.”
“Anyone lingering?” I ask.
“There’s someone keeping a low profile about a block away. It’s no one I recognize, and this isn’t the place to hang out and wait.”
“So, let’s scope out the old hangout and see what we have to work with.” I reach out for Mo’s hand as I finish the question. As we hold hands, I amplify her Eventual gift, and she scans the area, searching for random thoughts from people around the neighboring blocks.
Our hands disconnect. She says, “There’s maybe three people around here. Two are thinking things I wish I didn’t hear. There is a faint thought of a guy trying desperately to keep his mind clear.”
“Good guy or bad guy?” Jay asks.
“New guy, honestly. He keeps trying not to think, and when he does, he curses at himself.” Mo can’t help but chuckle at the poor guy. I would too if it weren’t for the fact this guy is about to take a trip.
“Hunter?” David wonders.
Mo nods but quickly replies, “This is the first assignment he’s had since his training. He’s a norm.”
The crowd says “Ohh.” Norms are the version of Hunters we all would prefer meeting if we have to choose one. They are physically combative, smart, and adaptive. So, to anyone else in the world, they’re lethal. To us, they are training tools on the road to defending against people more like ourselves. They’re our version of Easy Mode.
“I got him,” I announce. Mo walks over and gives me a kiss on the cheek and pushes a thought for me to be easy on him. I take it under consideration as she tells me his location, and I flash beside the Hunter.
The guy’s eyes are closed as though he is seriously concentrating on not having any thoughts. He looks unlike what I imagine any Hunter should look.
